general information
The competition is open to all youth up to 25 years of age in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Understanding and living the Qur’an has precedence over mere memorization. Knowledge of the Arabic language at any level is not a necessity. Applications will be accepted via email or at Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center from now until September 13, 2008. Deadline extended to September 19, 2008!!
There will be 3 first, second and third GRAND prizes for those who excel in the competition – a total of 9 Grand Prizes -- and of course the greatest prize is with Allah!

to compete
- Choose only ONE of the categories above (A, B or C) that is appropriate to your level
- Memorize the surrah in the chosen category
- Research and learn the important themes in the selected surah in order to articulate it verbally
- Provide a two page, double-spaced, size 12 font, Times New Roman essay about what moved you the most during your study of the surrah in the chosen category
- Essays must include
(1) How the surah moved you (2) The deep meanings of the surah as a whole and (3) Why it's important to follow through with the Quran during Ramadan.
- Essays must be submitted by September 21, 2008 to youth@masdc.org or by dropping it off at Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center’s Office.
- Recitation and oral competition will be held on September 28, 2008 at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center courtyard.
evaluation criteria
Each contestant will be evaluated on an individual level and in their respective age groups by a judge of the same gender as that of the contestant. Contestants will be judged on the fluency of their recitation (strength of memorization and implementation of the rules of tajweed). They will also be judged on their understanding of the material and their ability to articulate the message(s) learned from the surrah in the chosen category. Each contestant will be evaluated based upon their quality of writing and their ability to draw parallels and relate to the lesson(s) and message(s) behind the surrah.
