why mas dc service corps?

Although America is the “Land of Plenty”, there is no lack of poverty, no shortage of people who are hungry. Recent reports show that one in five children in the US go to bed hungry, while the ranks of the poor continue to grow: single mothers, immigrants, the elderly, and the working poor. In 2005, it is estimated that more than 36 percent of those served by food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters were children.

A universally compassionate faith, Islam teaches us that there is no distinction between a hungry Muslim or a hungry non-Muslim. A person who is suffering here in America is just as deserving as someone who is in distress elsewhere.

The Prophet Mohammed (May the Blessings of Allah be upon him) repeatedly tells us that we are responsible for our neighbors. This is illustrated through Hadith: “He is not a believer who lets himself be satiated while his neighbor goes hungry”. Islam offers a blueprint to the prevention of these problems by strengthening societal walls, and defining the goals of charitable giving.

MAS Service Corps, a subsidiary of the Muslim American Society, strives to contribute to the welfare of the whole community by extending Muslim citizens' volunteer efforts and financial assistance to people in need, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

The mission of the MAS Service Corps (MSC) is to recruit, train and organize volunteers from Muslim American Society chapters and Muslim communities in order to benefit people in need from our society, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. MSC also launches campaigns and projects supported by Muslim communities nationwide that, among other things, contribute to:

• Affordable housing

• Fighting hunger

• Fighting poverty

• Affordable health services

• Disaster Relief

• Other social services
